What the terms Graysexual, Gray Ace and Demisexual mean, as explained by a Demisexual

There is a lot of confusion both offline and online about what terms exist under the asexual spectrum, why asexuality is considered a spectrum identity, and what the words that exist within it mean and don’t mean. More specifically there is a lot of confusion about the words graysexual and demisexual, two identities that are housed under the asexual spectrum. Here, I hope to help you understand it better from my own demisexual/graysexual perspective, starting with the basics and then discussing the specifics of these spectrum identities.

So first, what’s asexuality?

Asexuality is a sexual orientation in which a person experiences little to no sexual attraction to others. It is considered a spectrum because some people may rarely, or under certain conditions, experience sexual attraction. Whether or not an asexual person has sex or dates varies from person to person, just as it does for those who are not asexual.
